Kelley Rohlfing Marchbanks
Vice President of Advancement, Stephens College
How long have you lived in Columbia in total? 30 years
When did you first move away, and how long were you gone? I was recruited from Mizzou to Oregon State University in 2011. We just moved back to Missouri this past Sept, 2025.
What motivated you to leave Columbia? I was working at the College of Veterinary Medicine, where we had a strong record of grateful giving from donors in the teaching hospital. Oregon State College of Vet Med was looking for someone to get a similar program up and running at their college/hospital. I was recruited to elevate the advancement team at OSU.
What brought you back? With aging parents, being closer to home is always nice. However, it was the new president at Stephens College that lured me back. In the world of advancement, true leadership can be both powerful and inspiring. She brought a vision and energy that I knew I wanted to be a part of.
What’s your favorite thing about Columbia now? The arts community! We are theater people and have a daughter who is a true artist. The arts scene in Columbia is eclectic and impressive. We plan to be both patrons and participants in all things art, theater, music, film, etc.
How has Columbia changed since you first lived here? It has definitely grown while still keeping the great vibe that we have always loved about being a college town. I love that it is also not just Mizzou. Stephens, Columbia College, MACC and Central Methodist each bring something unique to their students and the community. I love being a part of that.
How would you describe Columbia to someone thinking about moving here? Everything you love about a small midwestern community with the amenities, diversity and vibe of an urban hub.
Compared to other places you’ve lived, what makes Columbia stand out? A commitment to education and diversity – diversity of our people but also diversity of thought. This community creates opportunities and spaces to step outside your own world and explore different perspectives. In our polarized world – that perspective can be a very good thing.
What’s something you missed about Columbia while you were away? Our incredible Chamber of Commerce. Having been a part of a couple other communities, I saw first-hand the difference a strong chamber has and what happens when it is NOT strong. We are so lucky to have a network of businesses and leaders who are 100% committed to supporting each other and this community. That is such an asset and I am so excited to get back involved with OUR Chamber of Commerce – Women’s Network, The ATHENA awards, legislative relations, TRC, quarterly breakfasts and more!
What’s your favorite “only in Columbia” experience or tradition? Just coming off the holidays, Merry Ol’ Missouri at the Missouri Theatre captures everything that is Columbia Missouri – Talent, tradition, family, and history. If the theater scene is not for you, you can’t beat Rockbridge State Park for natural beauty and, of course, nothing is more Columbia than Homecoming Weekend!
