How long have you lived in Columbia in total? At least 40 years

When did you first move away, and how long were you gone? I moved away when I was 28, and I was gone for about 2 years

What motivated you to leave Columbia? I was offered a job in Washington, DC, to work for Senator Kit Bond. I then took a job with Senator Rand Paul

What brought you back? Was there a specific moment or reason that made you decide to return? I ran out of money lol. Senate pay was not enough to survive in DC, and while I was offered a more lucrative career there, I missed my family and friends here and being in my hometown. Also, while I was single with no children when I lived in DC, I remember thinking when I lived there that I would not want to raise a family there because of the crime and cost of living.

What’s your favorite thing about Columbia now? My husband is from Columbia too, so I love that my son gets to grow up around both sets of his grandparents and entire extended family. We also love taking our son to Mizzou games just like our parents took us, and instilling that sense of tradition and community. Our church home at The Crossing is also incredible, and we’re so grateful to have such an amazing faith community here.

How has Columbia changed since you first lived here? It’s grown so much over the years, and I have become more and more impressed with the food scene. Columbia has always had an impressive culinary variety and quality, which continues to expand and thrive.

How would you describe Columbia to someone thinking about moving here? It’s a college town with something for everyone, offering an array of cultural experiences.

Compared to other places you’ve lived, what makes Columbia stand out? Its bang for the buck, lack of traffic problems, and a sense of community.

What’s something you missed about Columbia while you were away? Besides my family and friends, I missed being able to drive somewhere easily, access what I need when I need it, and be able to get into nature without travelling far.

What’s your favorite “only in Columbia” experience or tradition? It’s a toss-up between attending a Mizzou football/basketball game, or going to the farmer’s market. We’re so lucky to have a university with longstanding traditions, as well as a farmer’s market that would be the envy of many communities – large or small. Oh – and who else has a Tropical Liqueurs?
